Another key finding is that the main factor influencing BK followers' careers was not the following of the BK but their past entrepreneurial experience. Recursively, our analyses show that the entrepreneurial experience of followers of entrepreneurs who pursue entrepreneurship influences their own entrepreneurial experiences, including increasing the number of startup ventures and net worth. Thus, BKs who engage in entrepreneurship may seek to formalize their engagement and increase their skills by pursuing new ventures to increase their value to large companies (Hoffman, 2006).
The second insight is that our analyses help to explain why existing BKs, who were able to successfully pursue entrepreneurship, have also been able to retain their large following. We found that BKs who were at the base-level of the organizational hierarchy (mostly key employees and founders) had a larger following than BKs who were at the top-level of the organization.
